***Diana Srebrovic, born in Toronto, lives in Burlington, is 21 ["I wish"], really 27. Nine Canadian junior titles led to the opportunity of an outstanding pro career. Instead, she turned her attention to college, decided on the University of Virginia before transferring to the University of Florida where she attained a #1 NCAA ranking. She now works with Bobby Armitage and Nathalie Armitage in the Oakville Tennis Academy.***

ONcourt: When you were at Universities, you transferred to Gator land [University of Florida], what were your reasons?

Diana Srebrovic: Initially, I chose the University of Virginia for its renowned academic program. However, I quickly realized that I would not be able to attain my athletic goals in Charlottesville.

**Sharon Fichman ranks with Helen Kelesi and Carling Bassett as Canadian junior players who were dominant figures in their junior days. She won the U 12 Orange Bowl, had great results in Junior Grand Slams, was the #1 Canadian U 18 junior player in singles and doubles at the age of 13 and was the youngest Canadian Fed Cup Team member at the age of … 14 Wow!***

ONcourt: Firstly, tell us about your injury. How did you get it? How does it feel now?

Sharon Fichman: I had some muscles spasms and irritation in my glute and it was very painful. It’s pretty complicated to explain but it’s something that could get worse if it’s not treated properly so it was important to take the time off. This type of injury happens for all kinds of reasons. I had been training and traveling a lot and that included flipping back and forth between time zones and I think my body was just fatigued and susceptible.

There’s no doubt that The 2012 Australian Open Men’s’ Final will be remembered as a herculean physical effort by two of the best athlete’s on the planet, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. Andy Roddick went so far as to say that it elevated the sport of tennis to a new physical level never seen before, a comment that was right on the money as the match was the longest ever final in the open era clocking 5 hours and 33 minutes. So what are the physical qualities necessary to compete in tennis at this level?

This approach is certainly physical in nature but translates itself in mental endurance, which the game is about.

***Marie-Eve comes from Repentigny By the Sea. She is 29 years old, won many national Junior titles and played Fed Cup for over 10 years for Canada. Her best WTA ranking in singles was #103 and 53 in doubles. Last March, semi retired and questioning her future, she got back in shape with the help of Kieran Foy at the National Center in Montreal to give one last go at the tour to see how far up she could get her singles ranking back up. During her career she played Team Tennis for four years, as well as five years in France for the Racing Club and also in Holland where her team won the Championships.***

ONcourt: How are you enjoying your farewell tour?

Marie-Eve Pelletier: I am having a great time playing better and better and able to enjoy the whole process as it is not so stressful.

ONcourt: Mentally how do you deal with your impeding retirement?

Marie-Eve Pelletier: I really enjoyed playing tennis. I am sad about this coming to an end as I really like the tour and the travel. Tennis is a real passion for me. Of course, there has to be a certain sadness in the end coming but I’m enjoying the process as I go.

His serving statistics are off the charts. He holds serve almost 90 percent of the time – best on the ATP tour. When he puts in that lethal first ball he wins almost 80 percent of the points – again, best on the ATP tour. His second serve is the best in the business – bar none. He became just the second player to win a tournament without dropping serve in early January in India. He just might have the best serve of all-time – better than any of his predecessors. And of course, we are talking about Canadian tennis superstar Milos Raonic. And Guess who the popular dark-horse pick to win the Australian Open was? – Milos Raonic! The tennis world has fallen in love with our Canadian luminary. This serving giant is can’t miss material in the minds of several tennis aficionados across the globe.

Pierre ‘The Bear’ Lamarche: No Coincidence #1 – A Player Serving With Both Hands

***A great occurrence in tennis is the many unbelievable encounters you have. Sometimes decades later a new meeting brings back memories and thoughts about the wonderful [or not so wonderful] moments you lived previously through the sport. The Bear now begins a new series “No Coincidence” which recalls some of these special moments.***

Innsbrooke, Florida – Three days of practice with Canadian Tennis Hall of Fame Member, with Harry Fauquier in Orlando, Viktoriya Kisialeva, the recent winner of both Tennis Canada $9000 holiday events, and I are discussing the possible benefit of the leftie learning to serve with her right hand. The 65 years old coach, back on the road, with his just turned 18 year old player, the maturing Bear suggests that the budding star learns to serve with her right hand (of course, in jest). Being Belarusian, her sense of humor is still developing and she answered “Nobody can play like that”. So I proceeded to tell her the story of Luke Jensen, the American who won the French Open Doubles serving with both hands.

Fast forward to next morning, on court #11 in Innsbrooke, Viktoriya is warming up and I am doing the coach imitation of a ball boy. Two other players from Syracuse University join us to share the court. One of them, starts warming up her serve left handed. The technique will not be used in any “how to” videos. Suddenly, she switches hands and her right handed serve is a beauty. She turns to me for one of her balls and I say: “Does Luke serve better with his right hand or his left?”. Bewildered, she answers correctly “With his left”.

***1993 French Open Doubles Champion, Luke and Murphy Jensen come from the all-American prototype family. Both parents are involved life coaches. The dad played for the NFL New York Giants and mom was a 6′2 basketball player. Twin sisters, Rachael and Rebecca, were WTA tour players. Luke went to USC, a top team in nation, played Davis Cup for the US for two years and was part of the Champion 1992 US Davis Cup Team. He was ranked as high as #5 in ATP doubles, played Team Tennis for 9 years and has done ESPN work since 1994. Now the coach at Syracuse University, we sat with him recently in Florida.***

ONcourt: Why did you go from the glamor of the pros to college tennis?

Luke Jensen: I turned 40, and I wanted to have the opportunity to give back to the game I love. Playing professional tennis was the best, it gave my family so much. I felt tennis had changed in the US and there was an overall lack of understanding of the effort and commitment which is required to achieve excellence. Being in the media with my TV work, I was tired of answering what was wrong with American tennis. I felt I had to try to do something about it and college coaching was a way to give back.

Last year, Novak Djokovic had one of the best years in tennis history, winning 3 Grand Slams and beating Rafael Nadal 6 consecutive times – all of those in major finals. A season many considered the best of all time, especially when you factor in the competition – namely Federer, Nadal and Murray! The question heard most often at the water coolers is “can he do it again.”

In the early stages of the first slam of the year – the hot topic is centered on Djokovic and his ability to dominate like he did last year. Was it a fluke? Many of the tennis pundits are predicting a more balanced winner’s circle – similar to what we’ve seen in the last few years on the Women’s tour. Some have suggested 4 winners instead of such domination by one player.

No one likes to make mistakes in practice, nobody likes to encounter setbacks and obstacles in games, and certainly no one likes to fail and lose in a tournament. It’s hurtful, disappointing, frustrating, and sometimes feels like you are back to square one! But there is a secret – a secret that only the top players know. Many top juniors fail to grasp what players such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and others have realized and used to their advantage as they have developed into the best the game has to offer. This knowledge is that mistakes, setbacks, obstacles and failure are inevitable. Further, it is how a player learns and adapts from these difficult experiences that determines whether their potential is fulfilled.

Hello All,

I hope everyone had a wonder holiday season and that you are all enjoying 2012.

Another Win for Milos

Milos Raonic (using his Blade 98) won his second career ATP title with a 6-7, 7-6, 7-6 win over # 9 Janko Tipsarevic. The young Canadian’s serve was lights out all week as he become the first player since Roger in 2008 to win all 48 service games in a tournament. As amazing as last year was for Milos, we are all hoping for even greater success in 2012.

Lopez EXCLUSIVELY Wilson

ATP # 20 Feliciano Lopez will be sporting all Wilson gear in 2012. Lopez will be using the Juice 100 frame on tour and will also be wearing Wilson footwear (Tour Ikon) and apparel. On top of a couple ATP titles and one doubles win, Feliciano is also a key member of three Spanish Davis Cup winning teams. The Juice has many in the tennis community questioning whether a frame that plays this well should be legal. Check out Feliciano’s response here.

I hope all SAT hopefuls were able to get some reading done in the holidays. If you’re considering writing the SAT between January and June 2012, you should be well on the way with a practice schedule. Make sure that your family are familiar with the collegeboard website. Make them read it at least once a week! To do really well on SAT, family and friends have all got to chip in and support you. Is there a family member, friend or even a neighbour who’s strong in math? Do you have grandparents who are keen readers? Pick their brains and have them quiz you on vocabulary. You may be surprised at how much they know.

ONcourt: Your two years at the NTC provided you with great opportunities, what sticks out in your mind?

Sam Monette: The opportunity provided me with a chance to mature as a person and to develop autonomy. I was very lucky to live all types of new experiences from travelling the world to seeing and competing with the best players of my age.

ONcourt: Was it hard to make the decision to bypass the opportunity to play pro and go to University?

Sam Monette: Last year in May I had a close match with Vasek Pospisil and I was unsure as I was doing well. Since then I have taken a step backward and decided to fulfill my childhood dream of playing on a US college team.

***Kieran Foy is the current National Training Centre (NTC) Fitness coach. The 31 year old Dublin born has been in Montreal since 2007. He completed M.Sc. degree by research with concentration in exercise physiology at University of Quebec, Montreal (UQAM). To learn more about Kieran and is passion for fitness, please visit his website www.unchainedfitn ess.com.***

ONcourt: Your approach to physical development is based a lot on running, why is that?

Kieran Foy: Running is the fundamental activity in the majority of sports, including tennis, so it makes sense that a considerable part of a tennis athlete’s training should be devoted to running. Physically, running is great for developing general endurance and for the muscles & tendons of the legs. In soccer for example, the research indicates that players with the best endurance have more touches of the ball and cover more distance on the pitch. These are key performance indicators. In my mind, there’s no reason why the same principle shouldn’t apply to tennis. An athlete with good running skills will cover the baseline with ease, will have good footwork, and will always return cheeky drop shots or flat shots that clip the net.

Mentally, running is great for building toughness and determination. A friend of mine sums it up nicely: “running is an attitude”!

***Erin first started hitting when she was about 7. She has been playing competitively since she was 9. Erin was born in New Zealand but has been living in Caledon, Ontario, with Mom, Dad and two younger sisters since she was 5. Erin attends Mayfield Secondary School (Grade 11) but will enroll at Bill Crothers in January for ‘remote learning ’support so she can go to Montreal.***

ONcourt: Erin, congratulations on an outstanding performance in Florida. What was the difference between the Eddie Herr event and the more prestigious Orange Bowl championships?

Erin Routliffe: Thank you! The Orangebowl I felt was a lot more formal, they had chair umpires for every match and they were a lot more organized with their match schedules. I like the atmosphere at both tournaments though. I also felt like the viewing at the Orangebowl was a little better, and there were many more locals there who came to watch the matches.

ONcourt: Who do you feel has been instrumental in your development and how so?

Erin Routliffe: I have been working with Harry Greenan since I was about 9 years old. Harry has always insisted on technical details. I wanted to play tennis, Harry made me work. I credit Harry with giving me the tools that I can use when I compete. Harry wants his players to think – before, during and after a match. He never is too upset when I lose as long as I learn from it.

Filip Peliwo, Canada’s Next Superstar

***The 17 year old from Vancouver BC has won 14, 16 and 18 Canadian singles titles and two doubles title. His ITF ranking will be in the top 20 at the end of the year and has reached 850 ATP ranking. Filip is the poster boy for the National training center in Montreal and is seen by many as the next Canadian superstar.***

ONcourt: How long have you been in Montreal at the National Center and how helpful has your stay been there?

Filip Peliwo: This is my third year and I have to thank Tennis Canada for where I am now because they provided the training and travel opportunities I could not have had in Vancouver.

ONcourt: If you had to name a few persons who have helped you achieve your present level of performance, who would they be?

Filip Peliwo: 1. My parents have always supported me and my dad was my coach.

2. Guillaume [Marx] and Joycelin [Robichaud] who are my current coaches.

3. Kieran Foy, my fitness trainer.

Milan Pokrajac Back On Tour

***24 year old Milan Pokrajac born in Croatia, moved to Canada at the age of 12, where he won two national junior titles, reached an ATP ranking of 411. The Big-Serving leftie was forced into semi-retirement by injuries. He took the time to go to university in 2009 where he proceeded to receive a Commerce and Business degree from the University of Toronto. He is now returning to the tour assisted by the Ontario Racquet Club and former ATP player Gary Muller who provides support for his reintegration into the pro ranks.***

ONcourt: Where are you now in your career?

Milan Pokrajac: I have played some Futures tournament and got my ATP ranking in the 800’s. I am looking to move up to Challengers and be in top 200 within 18 months.

ONcourt: What stopped you in your first attempt on the pro tour?

Milan Pokrajac: The major problem I had was injuries which are now healed. Also when I was younger I really did not have better players to train with and it did affect my belief in my potential.

JOSH KAPLAN and Dan Poliwoda’s civics class assignment was to create a public service announcement “for an issue in Canada.” They came up with the YouTube video, “Milos Raonic PSA Song,” which has been viewed more than 23,000 times since last March. Now, nine months later, on November 17, the two 16-year-old students from Tannenbaum Community Hebrew Academy of Toronto are about to perform the song at the Air Canada Centre (ACC) in front of about 5,000 people. Both are wearing black suits-Kaplan with a tie, Poliwoda with a bowtie-and their hero, Milos Raonic, stands between them. While he might not be the Messiah-like figure Kaplan and Poliwoda sing about, Raonic is Canada’s best tennis player, and he is ready to play an exhibition match against tennis legend Pete Sampras once the song ends. But two things that Kaplan and Poliwoda sing about happen to be true: Raonic has made tennis more popular in Canada and he’s inspired many Canadians. Poliwoda writes that performing at the ACC gave him “the feeling of being infinitely powerful and that nothing would stop me. The smallest thing can turn into something big, all you need is effort.” And in Raonic’s case, a big serve also goes a long way.
